"Now
what do I do?"
--response from a new hire
If you
asked 100 people the purpose of education, you would get 101 answers. While
comparisons between education and business models are largely misguided, one
difference is notable. The explicitness of purpose in a business clarifies
direction and makes structure and process much more tangible.
How can
you feel good about a job well done if it's not clear exactly what the job is?
Ambiguity of purpose can increase stress, decrease motivation, and bring every
action into question. It's hard to know what best to do.
And what not to.
A goal
setting program can:
-align
everyone's efforts
-set minimum benchmarks
-identify targets to strive for
-provide direction for decisions
-lay the groundwork
for innovation
-rule out
ineffective policy and practice
-lead
the way for joy of accomplishment |
